"James Dean Meets
Cain:
East of Eden"
Please join 3 Stars Cinema and Congregation Shearith Israel for "James
Dean Meets Cain:
East of Eden."
East of Eden, James Dean's first movie (he was chosen for the part of
Caleb (Cain) over Paul Newman) is based on John Steinbeck's family
saga. Steinbeck, as he tells us in his diaries, built the modern tale
of fratricide on the basis of the Biblical tale of Cain killing Abel
and being exiled east of the Garden of Eden. His language, situations
and message repeatedly reinterpret the Biblical story of 16 lines.
Steinbeck discovers his own new translation to the Biblical verse and
corresponds with the Bible scholar Louis Ginsberg to try to convince
him. This is a movie to study like a text and you will be invited to
offer your own interpretations interpolated within the movie. So come
ready to uncover new layers in a "classic" film that illuminates the
Bible as much as the Bible illuminates it.
This event will feature Shaerith Israel scholar-in-residence Noam Zion.
Popcorn, soft drinks, and water will be served!
